Dec 2 - Remembering Recipes

Do you remember making any specific recipe with older family members?  What was the experience like?

Hmmm......

There are so many different foods that I remember about the holidays.  One of my favorites and one I look forward to most is my Grandma Betty's homemade noodles.  I can remember her and my Grandmother {her mom} standing in Grandmothers kitchen mixing, rolling, cutting, and cooking these DELICIOUS noodles.

As a young child I never gave much thought to the process of noodle making.  I simply knew they were wonderful and we always had them on holidays and special occassions.  I remember standing on a stool and watching and helping them cut those noodles.

My Grandmother has been gone for quite awhile now and I do miss her and her fiery attitude!  I am pretty sure she is where I inherited my temperment from!

A few years ago I decided that I would like to have my Grandma Betty "teach" me to make these noodles one holiday.  She very excitedly agreed to do so.  I don't think she realized how hard a job this was going to be!!  With her help and guidance I was able to make a pretty good batch of noodles.  But as soon as I got home and was on my own, they didn't turn out quite so well!

My dad's entire family looks forward to Grandma's noodles and very rarely are there leftovers!  I think I hear my stomach growling and if this week wasn't so busy already I might have to break out the flour and give them another try!  Maybe in a week or two I will give it another go.

There is no ideal Christmas; only the one Christmas you
decide to make as a reflection of your values, desires,
affections and traditions.

Nope. Nada. Zilch. Not a single memory of a recipe or baking together. Seems my family musta spotted early what I have learned since, my talents are not in the kitchen. They kept me outta there.

One year for Christmas (probably 10 years ago) I made a chocolate sheet cake. I didn't know you needed a basically sturdy, flat sheet. Mine was warped. The cake basically ran to one end. I didn't know you had to really whip or beat or whatever to the frosting. I remember everyone said, "Traci! You don't like nuts, why did you put them in the frosting?" No nuts, powdered sugar lumps. We play lots of card games and board games when we are all together. That day, the loser had to try a piece of my sheet cake. Now every year people ask if I'll be bringing my "SHEEEIIIIT CAKE" (pronounced with a tendency towards sh!t cake).
